Vibroacoustic stimulation is a method that uses low-frequency sound vibrations to create a physical sensation for diagnostic and therapeutic purposes. In pregnancy, it's used to test fetal well-being by arousing the fetus to assess its neurological status. Therapeutically, it can be used in therapy to reduce stress, anxiety, and pain by invoking a relaxation response.

Uses

  • Fetal well-being:A device is placed on the mother's abdomen to send vibrations to the fetus to gauge its response, which helps determine if the baby is neurologically active. This can reduce the need for non-reactive non-stress tests and shorten test times, making it useful in antenatal testing.
  • Therapeutic:Therapists use vibroacoustic devices to deliver sound vibrations to the body to help with various physical and psychological symptoms. Potential benefits include reducing anxiety, stress, and muscle pain, as well as improving sleep and promoting relaxation.
  • Neurological rehabilitation:Early-stage research suggests it may help with motor function and sensory stimulation for rehabilitation purposes.

How it works

  • Diagnostic:A handheld device sends sound vibrations through the mother's abdomen to the fetus. The baby's movements and heart rate changes are then monitored to assess its neurological status.
  • Therapeutic:A person lies down and the vibrations are delivered through specialized devices, such as a mat or chair. The person experiences the sound as a physical, haptic sensation, which can lead to deep relaxation and other effects.

Safety

  • Fetal use:Vibroacoustic stimulation is generally considered safe for use in pregnancy, though it can cause vigorous fetal movements.
  • Therapeutic use:When used therapeutically, the primary risk is a potential side effect of the intended effect, such as vigorous fetal movements, or a fetal distress event.
